Athlete Spotlight - Emily Kratz

Meet The Run Formula Athlete and 2021 Leadwoman Champion Emily Kratz!  Sunday morning, August 22nd, she crossed the finish line in the final race in the Leadwoman series, the Leadville 100mi Trail Race.  The series consisted of 5 races.  The Leadville Trail Marathon, the Silver Rush 50mi MTB race, or 50mi Silver Rush Trail Run, (she did both).  The last three races of the series were the Leadville 100mi MTB race, the Leadville 10k Trail Run, and finally the Leadville 100mi Trail Run.  In a total time of 50:12:33, Emily was 1st Overall female for 2021.   Emily is coached by Vinny Johnson.

Questions for Emily:

How long have you been racing?

I have been racing triathlon/ultra stuff for the past 10 years or so

What are your goals for this season?  Long Term?

I think my ongoing goal is to first just keep having fun and enjoying the ride…to try new races and formats, see new sights, stay healthy and consistent and simply appreciate the process. 

What is your favorite workout?

I love a good interval session on the treadmill during the week and a lets go long and try a new trail and eat snacks kind of adventure on the weekend.

What brought you to running?

I think just the simplicity of it- just need some shoes and a place to go…it’s a great way to just clear the head…doesn’t matter how fast or slow I go - I always feel better at the end than I did at the start.

What did you do in 2020 to keep yourself motivated?

I had a goal to run 200 miles in August and worked towards that all year…I wasn’t always motivated to go - but the discipline to accomplish a goal outweighs motivation for me any day.

When and why did you begin with The Run Formula ?

I have been working with Vin for 7+ years…I wanted a smart, thoughtful, and data driven approach to get me to the finish line healthy and happy. ..I work full time and needed a balanced approach to my training.

Who is your coach?


What do you like best about working with your coach?

He keeps it simple and real…believes in me when I sometimes doubt myself.  He is flexible and always finds a way to make my training work within all my other life dynamics.  I appreciate his openness (and patience ;) ) to all my crazy ideas and adventures…most of all, he is just a great human who cares more about me as a person than my results which is awesome.

Questions for Coach Vinny:

What do you like most about coaching Emily?
Emily is always on the lookout for different types of races.  From a coaching perspective, it keeps the challenge of getting the most out of training varied.  She has an uncommon, fresh approach to lining up races, which keeps me coming up with uncommon, fresh approaches to training. 

What is one thing which stands out most about Emily?

Emily doesn't get lost in the numbers.  She puts a lot of trust in me, to be the one who pays attention to that.  This enables her to have a more even approach to daily training, which really enhances her over training season.  We only have so much energy and Emily doesn't waste energy on the things out of her control.  She wakes up, gets it done, and repeats.  She doesn't get lost in the emotions of poor workouts, or even amazing workouts.
